DIY Activity: Bubble Painting

We know children learn best when they’re having fun, so we always try to come up with novel ideas to keep them engaged and entertained at home too. This one is a classic arts and crafts project and it is a great option all year around, especially as the temperature drops and parents try to keep the little ones warm and cosy inside the house.

Bubble painting is very cheap and inspires children to learn maths, physics and chemistry. Learning to mix the right amounts of water, paint and soap, or maybe even mixing paint colours will make them feel like quite the scientists.

Another great thing about bubble painting is that it is so versatile; you can use it as art pieces in your child’s room – just frame them and hang them on the wall, you can create beautiful handmade cards – for birthdays, Christmas and thank you notes, and if you get a long roll of white paper, your little one can even create their own wrapping paper, making their friends’ birthday gifts even more special!

What you’ll need:

1 bowl/container

2 tablespoons liquid tempera paint

2 tablespoons dish soap

1 tablespoon water

Straw/s – try to find reusable paper or metal straws

Paper or cardboard: you can cut it into pieces that match the size of the bowl/container you’ll be using, or, if you are creating your own wrapping paper, you can assist your child in handling the large piece of paper.

How to do it:

Pour tempera pain, dish soap and water into your mixing container.

Use your straw to mix liquids around then blow until bubbles rise to the top. No one knows your child like you do, so you can decide whether they should be in charge of blowing bubbles or if you should assist them.

Place your paper or cardboard on top of bubbles for a second or two then remove and let it dry.

Tips:

Have different containers with different colours to allow for greater creativity.

If you are creating a large piece and need more mixture, stick to the same 2:2:1 ration and increase the amount.
