Keeping Safe at The Beach

Here are some tips that we have put together to help you keep your children safe at the beach this summer!

As we move into the warmer months, there is nothing quite as exciting as spending the day at one of the Gold Coast’s beautiful beaches! At Bush Babies, we are big believers in teaching children about water safety from a young age. Here are some tips that we have put together to help you keep your children safe at the beach this summer!

  1. Where to Swim

We are very lucky to have so many beautiful beaches in the Gold Coast region. However, it is important to bear in mind that only some of these beaches are patrolled – meaning that there are lifeguards and rescue crews keeping an eye on beach goers. These are the best places for children to swim.

At patrolled beaches, the safest area will be marked with red and yellow flags – always make sure your children are swimming between the flags!

  1. When to Swim

It is best to avoid the beach around dusk, and never swim after dark. Poor visibility at these times means that no one can see you if you need help.

Another thing to bear in mind is that between 11am and 1pm is generally the hottest part of the day. You might choose to plan your beach trip around these times. Whatever time you decide to go, always remember sunscreen, a hat, and a sleeved shirt for your child and try to choose a shady area to set up.

  1. Developing Swimming Ability

For children living in coastal areas, it is always a great idea to look at swimming lessons or surf lifesaving (if they are old enough). These extracurricular activities will help your children to become strong swimmers and teach beach safety skills like recognising rips and swimming in the surf.

At The Strawberry Bush, we have regular incursions from the Gold Coast City Lifeguard Association, and the children really enjoy learning all about staying safe at the beach. It is easy to forget how dangerous the surf can be, and we would like to remind families to stay vigilant this summer!
